José Ignacio is a gorgeous little town about 40 km east along the coast from Punta del Este.

It's a town where fishermen's huts and glorious mansions stand side by side. José Ignacio has only about 200 permanent inhabitants, however, during the summer months (December to March) this little town comes alive. People come from far afield to throw parties, enjoy carnival and see concerts in the lighthouse. Relaxation always remains high on the agenda though and many argue there is nowhere better in Uruguay to go to unwind.

If you feel a bit more active you can enjoy good surfing in the area and even kitesurfing at Laguna Garzon. It is also an attractive place to visit during the winter months between July and late October as the weather stays mild. Then you share this little paradise with far fewer people and Franca whales too, resting on their way to Península Valdés in Argentina. It is worth bearing in mind however that during the low season — including November — many of the area's bars and restaurants are closed which does tend to restrict eating options to your hotel.
